General Summary

The Costume Fabricator works as part of a team, under the supervision of the Head of Costume, fabricating costumes for animation puppets used in Stop Motion feature films. This position will be required to quickly grasp the design concept as defined by the Costume Designer, stay on style throughout the fabrication process and provide a high level of finishing for miniatures that hold up to scrutiny on a big screen.

Job Functions

  • Follow reference images, designs and design direction when working on new puppets.
  • Pattern garments using draping, flat pattern manipulation techniques and a variety of costume construction techniques such as extremely fine hand sewing, cutting, fusing, gluing, embroidery, etc.
  • Follow costume construction notes and direction to accurately duplicate puppet multiples.
  • Create a support structure that goes under a garment that enhances desired puppet movement and performance; this includes hard elements like wires and rigid forms as well as soft elements like foam or fabric linings.
  • Document detailed, concise and easy to follow instructions for all patterns and processes used in creating a costume.
  • Embellish fabrics by using a range of techniques while maintaining fabric performance, when needed.


  • 3+ years of experience with puppet fabrication preferred.
  • Experience in pattern cutting/draping (small scale/stop motion preferred).
  • Experience with prop/model making preferred.
  • Innovative approach and knowledge of textile and fiber art techniques preferred.
  • Ability to replicate costumes accurately.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fabric properties.
  • Knowledge of dying and color mixing.
  • Knowledge of Photoshop and illustrator.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with costume team members as well as other departments.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time well to meet tight deadlines.

The noise level is usually quiet or moderate. In certain assignments, an employee may occasionally work near moving equipment and be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne fumes and loud, prolonged noise (hearing protection required when using power tools).
